South Dakota Trip Report

by Darwin Barrie

Traveling to South Dakota by commercial airlines is a pain and expensive. It is also an inconvenience to relatives that would have to drive over an hour to pick me up. Driving would be a hard 2 day drive, especially solo.
The RV opens many doors to travel that were previously closed. I can go on my time, and to an airport much closer to the family. As you can see from the first photo, my uncle is not located in a booming metropolis. Keeping with my promise to stay in touch with relatives, I promised my uncle that I would make the journey this year to take in the pheasant season.

Formation Flying

I've had the good fortune to meet and fly with many pilots during my flying career. Over the last couple of years, I've been gradually learning about formation flying under the tutelage of several experts when I visit Boulder City, NV (61B) to fly my Extra 300L. I recently enjoyed a refresher as part of a four-ship fight. I was in my Extra 300L with two RV-6As and an RV-8.

Our lead (in his RV-6A) was Mark DuLaney, an experienced Air Force fighter pilot and instructor (his last assignment was as commander of an aggressor squadron at Nellis AFB). "Dula" has been an excellent and patient instructor, and I've also benefited from the generosity, experience, and skill of several other former Air Force pilots (including Mike Smith, below in his RV-6A painted in Air Force colors) who have baby-sat me while I fumbled through the fundamentals of flying in close proximity to other aircraft. It's a demanding--and rewarding--discipline. [bruceairllc.spaces.live.com] (More)

Van's Nosegear Bulletin

Data from the field, and the results of NTSB Structures Study (Case
No.ANC05LA123 dated June 21, 2007), suggest that increased nose fork axle-
to-ground clearance may reduce the likelihood of fork axle-to-runway surface
contact during nose gear overload conditions. The nose gear leg/fork
combination supplied in two-place tricycle gear RV kits after February, 2005
provides this increased clearance. Complying with this service bulletin will give
aircraft shipped prior to that date the same, increased clearance. [Vans Aircraft] (More)

RV-10 Blogging

The summer was spent working my way through the rest of the empennage kit.  It is nearly complete with just a handfull of rivets and fairing to complete.  It’s hard to believe, but within the next short while, all the pieces that came in the first crate will be fully assembled!  I’ve also spent considerable time researching planning the systems that will be installed in my airplane.  There are a huge number of options for equipment and even more on how to install and use those systems.  Each decision also requires significant research and learning before proceeding. Confessions of a non-builder

I flew my new airplane for the first time yesterday. It is an experimental airplane which simply means that it was not certified by the FAA like a Cessna or a Piper. It is called a Van's RV-10. This one was built by a guy near Huntsville, AL. I have to admit that he did a better job building it that I could have.
For years, I have jokingly commented to Penny that I needed a bigger, faster airplane. I was actually pretty happy with the one that I had. It was fast, aerobatic and just plain fun to fly. The only downside to it was that it only had enough room for two people. Anyway, Penny would always roll her eyes and snicker when I talked about a bigger airplane.

Mel James RV-9A first flight report

We ordered a RV-9A “Quickbuild” kit from Vans Aircraft in October 2004 and 2 giant crates arrived in early January 2005. It took us at least 2 weeks just to unpack, identify and store the vast number of parts. In accordance with Vans instructions, we started by building the Empennage. 2 right elevators, 2 vertical stabilisers and 3 elevator trim tabs later we began to learn from our mistakes and realise the task ahead. RV Life Coach Wanted

You know, we live in an age of specialization and I think I've come up with an idea for a new job: RV construction consultant. This is different from tech counselor. This is more like a "life coach" for RV builders.

Here's why: I feel myself getting to the point where I'm overwhelmed by what I need to do next, and so I don't know what to do next.

Example: It's too cold to work on the canopy anymore so that's put away 'til spring... I don't want to install the struts and mounts (even though that's what I've been working on) without having the canopy in place. (More)

Accident Reports

RV-7A forced landing

On November 5, 2007, about 1635 eastern standard time, an amateur built Vans Aircraft RV-7A, N723EP, was substantially damaged during a forced landing, after it experienced a loss of engine power while in cruise flight near West Point, Virginia. The certificated commercial pilot was seriously injured. [ntsb] (More)

EAA Opposes Planned Restrictions on GA

November 9, 2007  —Even though personal general aviation has been deemed to not be a national security risk time and again by numerous federal agencies, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) strongly hinted Monday that the its long-term strategy aims to manage GA like commercial airliners. EAA is opposing that strategy.

The DHS feels that a discrepancy exists between general aviation security and airline security and wants more restrictions on GA. EAA will continue to oppose restrictions that are overreactions to the threat level GA poses.

In a recent NPRM, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) proposed a passenger and crew security vetting process that requires pilots to submit a passenger manifest at least 1 hour before flight - submission of which must be by computer. EAA fundamentally understands the need of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and DHS to obtain more complete information regarding private aircraft entering the territorial United States, and that this regulatory initiative is in direct response to a mandate from the U.S. Congress. As such EAA does not outright oppose the intent of this rulemaking proposal. (More)

BUSH CALLS FOR USER FEES

President Bush on Nov. 15 announced a series of measures to reduce airline delays, including opening restricted airspace on the East Coast to commercial flights during the holiday season. And he renewed the administration's call for higher taxes and user fees on general aviation.

"If we really want to solve this problem, it's time for Congress to modernize the FAA, and we've given them a blueprint to do so," said Bush, referring to the administration's FAA funding bill that would increase GA avgas taxes by 263 percent and impose user fees. [AOPA] (More)

Phase I of OSH Runway Project Completed

The first phase of Wittman Regional Airport's $7.3 million Runway 9/27 reconstruction project was completed this past Monday, November 12, and the runway opened for traffic at 2:35 p.m. CST. Airport officials reported that a transient Cessna 172 was the first aircraft to land on the new pavement. The first departure was a Wittman-based Remos special light-sport aircraft. [EAA] (More)

Moving project to airport

In the middle of the night a couple of days ago, Jim Manton came up with a simple mod to make to his snowmobile trailer that should allow us to use it instead of renting a flat bed trailer. It is a very sturdy, wide trailer, but it isn't long enough. However, without the wings or moveable tail surfaces installed, there is actually very little weight on the tail wheel. Jim proposed to make an extension to the back of the trailer out of two pieces of plank. We'll stack two 14 ft long planks together, and bolt them on the top of the trailer deck, with the ends of the planks extending aft. We'll screw some plywood to the sides to gusset them together, and to make some fences on each side of the tail wheel. This should work quite well - knock wood. We bought all the hardware and wood yesterday. Tonight we'll install the plywood gussets. Tomorrow I'll pick up ramps from Mark Richardson. Friday night I'll do my weather dance, and Saturday morning we'll see how it all works out. [kilohotel.com] (More)

Shutdown Yahoo RV7A Group?

It had been noticed that the Yahoo RV7A [and other model] group had not been seeing the activity it had in the past.  A suggestion was made that it was time to close the group in favor or the other online collaboration systems out there.  Popular opinion shows strong support for keeping the group active, however.  It seems like the Yahoo group is still highly relevant and the preferred place for serious builders to get serious help and advice.  Keep it up!
