Multiple offender, multiple times

Third time for Steve Chia

There are those that only build a plane because they want one so bad that's the only way they can get one. They are called "flyers that build."  There are those that build a plane because they enjoy the building process. They are called, "builders that fly."  I think that if you told me that I could be one or the other, I would want to be the builder and not the flyer.

The places you can go...

Mt. RushmoreYou've probably figured this out by now, but of all the RV content that's out there, the stories of flights RVators take interest me most. These days, these are almost exclusively posted on Doug Reeves' indispensable site. But there are so many, perhaps you've missed one, or you just want me (Bob) to grab the best of them. OK, here's a few, starting with Scott Schmidt's flight from Salt Lake City to Oshkosh. [VAF] (More)

RV-4 takes prize for speed, quiet

"The RV-4 had a large number of modifications to achieve the lower noise, and they did an enormous amount to flight testing with noise meters to become masters of low noise flight," said NASA aerospace engineer Mark Moore. [CNet] (More)

Workbenches for your project

Attaching the top to the workbenchThe hangar needs some storage and working space and so I had to build new workbenches and it reminds me thatfor those of you who are planning your homebuilt airplane project, it's never too early -- or too late -- to start building your systems. Fortunately, it's easy to do thanks to the geniuses at EAA Chapter 1000, who -- more than 15 years ago -- issued the best plans available for workbenches. (More)

Van's Homecoming underway

[ed. note] The homecoming got underway under mostly cloudy, cool conditions. The winds have been light... favorable for greaser landings for those arriving at Independence airpark in Oregon to attend the homecoming.

From Doug Reeves: Friday evening the BBQ was really a nice time. The temps were perfect and the food and fellowship were as pleasing as you could hope for. Van, Rian, Scott M., Joe and other Van's employees showed and many dozens of folks got to enjoy the band (which were excellent).

Dropping the Egg

I had a choice between flying Co-pilot Egg out to my parent's horse farm in Darke Co. where she will be spending the week, or driving her there. This morning's forecast called for winds at 14 gusting 20, so driving looked like the better option. The noon forecast, though, had a better guess (better, in this case, meaning more amenable to my needs, not more accurate) of 6 to 8 knot winds. Well, that pretty much made the decision a no-brainer.

One thing they always tell you before taking a test is to trust your first answer. This would be good advice for weather guessers too, as it turns out. We arrived at VES to find gusting winds well over 15 knots, coming from the northwest. This wasn't really a surprise as the en route speed ranging from 137 to 143 knots indicated that there was quite a bit of air pushing against us. [Papa Golf Chronicals] (More)

TIPS/Q&A

Roll your own visors

VisorFrank Karasti of Gilbert, Minn., made his own visors for his RV-9. "The acrylic is 4 1/4" X 10" dark smoke, screwed to a stiff aluminum 1/4" rod with 4-40 screws (drilled and tapped). the mount is all stainless .072 X .75 with a 1/4" socket for the rod TIG welded and tapped for a 8-32 knob. The distance between the socket and the bolt hole is 3/4" oc. They vibrate very little and are breeze to remove. [VAF] (More)

Therapy

Bob and his therapistIn the last month, I've noticed another role that they -- well, at least mine  The canopy frame, which I started in the cold of February, had a canopy on it -- sort of -- by July. On July 8, I made the large cut, cleaned up the edges and put it on the airplane. I took the usual pictures, marvelled at how far ahead of schedule I was, and left it to sit... and sit... and sit. So much for the schedule. (More)

A surefire way to get a mention in the RV Builder's Hotline is either a mention of the Hotline, or the RV BBQ. 9/11 law contains new security measures affecting GA

If you are returning from a Mexican siesta or Caribbean sojourn, be advised that the U.S. government plans to watch general aviation aircraft more closely. As part of a broader piece of security legislation, which President Bush signed into law on August 3, is a measure that will require the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to determine which aircraft -- registered foreign or domestic -- flying into the United States must furnish passenger manifests before departure. Currently, aircraft do this upon arrival. In addition, the new statute calls for the TSA to conduct threat or vulnerability assessments at GA airports and authorize a federal funding program for security improvements at those airports.
