North Carolina airport tour

by Ron Schreck

It's a big state, even by plane

I can’t say that I’m ready to do it all over again, but a long shower and a good night’s sleep are just what I needed after flying for over 17 hours on July 4th! I’m not sure where the idea came from, but at some point I decided that it sure would be neat to touch down at all of the public use airports in North Carolina. Then some idiot (perhaps me) suggested that it might be possible to do it in one day! That’s 109 landings in 24 hours! (110 if you count my home field, which is a private airport.) (More)

RVs at Peach State Aerodrome

An RV at Peach State AerodromeIf the people at Van's ever decide to show how an RV is beautiful just sitting on the ground (or slightly above it), then photographer Don Neuberg of Outwardbound Photography will have images all over future issues of the Van's calendar. Don is also a commercial pilot. He sends along these fine images from last Saturday's fly-in at Peach State Aerodrome in Georgia. (More)

Ramp checks the FAA way

A pair of FAA inspectors engaged members of the Minnesota Wing of Van's Air Force  at the group's quarterly meeting at South St. Paul Municipal Airport (SGS) last Saturday. Oddly, though, neither indicated any knowledge of the RV airplane, which may mean they haven't "ramp checked" many of them. In both cases, they stressed the FAA isn't out to get pilots when conducting ramp checks. (More)

Aerobatics in an RV

Flying with Bryan DukesOn the SoCal YGroup this week,  Bryan Dukes said "I posted my last video a little over a month ago. After 4 weekends in Alaska for a work trip, I'm back & just put together another video of me doing aerobatics in my -6. The camera is my soon-to-be tailcam 170deg wide-angle bullet camera mounted with a RAM-Mount in the cockpit. The video for this release was shot on a single 30-minute flight - no footage was repeated. (More)

Scenes from the NW RV Fly-in

NW RV Fly-inThis year's 16th Annual NW RV Fly-in was a bit damper than in years past. In fact, som eof us couldn't get there until after noon. And it's not because we couldn't get out of bed either. Overall, the Fly In was a success. Yes, it did rain a little, the BlackJacks didn't make it. We did, however have a great time and hosted an estimated 60-70 RVs. [EAA 105] (More)

TIPS/Q&A

Drilling the canopy

In answer to a question about how to keep cracks from forming on the counterunk holes on the canopy, Gary Smith replied, "Before I screwed either piece of Perspex down I painted a band about 1 inch wide on the inside of the canopy where the roll bar will touch. (I lightly abraded the Perspex with 1000 grit wet and dry paper and the paint was 2 pack grey, the same colour as the interior). After I had screwed the canopy down for real the paint on the Perspex stuck out about ¼ inch past the metal frame of the roll bar. I then mixed up some proseal, worked it into a 10cc syringe and then applied a bead of sealant between the Perspex and the roll bar, thus distributing the point loads of the screws (hopefully) to a much greater area of the adhesive bead. This bead of adhesive actually touches the Perspex on the painted band and if the line goes a little wobbly it will not be seen from outside. I brush painted the adhesive and it looks great. The other advantage of painting bands inside the Perspex (at the roll bar) is that after a few years dust and dirt accumulates in the tiny gap between the perspex and the roll bar where you cant get to clean and the perpex being clear means you can always see the dust. I applied the technique of bonding all the Perspex edges when the Vagabond was rebuilt in 1995, 830 hours later and there are absolutely no cracks or crazing on the screen, so it worked for me. Hope this helps." [Gary Smith on RVSQN]

Letters from Flyover County

Cutting plastic

Nearing the final cutOne of the things that fascinates me about building an RV airplane, is the opportunity to work with a variety of materials. By this stage of construction -- the finishing kit -- most builders (and even me if I think about it long enough) are pretty darned comfortable with sheet metal work. In fact, by now it becomes our security blanket. Nervous about working with fiberglass or plexiglass or electrical work? No problem, do some airframe work on ye olde aluminum. (More)
