Behind every good builder

Carolie Collins tests out an RV-7A
Behind every good builder, there is a source of great inspiration; or at least someone who doesn't say, "get those airplane parts out of our bedroom." Doug Weiler, the PIC of the Van's Air Force Minnesota Wing, solicited and has assembled their stories in this quarter's issue of RVator's Log, the fine newsletter of the group. There's also plenty of RV-building information in the issue for those of you who prefer the "don't ask, don't tell" approach to marital RV matters. (More)

Van's Club France Fly-in

Van's Club fly-in in FranceWisconsin has Oshkosh, and France has Nuit-Saint-George, the scene of the 2007 Van's Club de France fly-in, the first of the international fly-ins of the season. Olivier Le Carbonier posted a slideshow. As Michel Delsol said on rvsqn,"As builders and pilots of RVs we share in a common interests which binds us much more than the separation enforced by language differences. We are witnessing more and more the fact that we are a truely European group in the good sense, each one maintains his identity yet a common purpose unites us." (More)

Missed preflight actions can kill

It was a lovely day in Wichita, Kansas. A bit windy but that goes with the territory. An RV-4 pilot and his wife took off for a planned trip to Missouri. Things were perfectly normal until a sudden distraction grabbed the pilot's attention just as the airplane became airborne. The canopy suddenly popped open. SWRFI reviewed

Hanging out at SWRFII was pretty skeptical about going to a fly-in west of San Antonio in June, but it really turned out to be a nice day with a constant breeze that kept things from ever getting scorching hot all day. I saw and talked to so many people from this and other RV forums that if I started to mention names, I would never end, and would assuredly leave someone out - so all I will do is say that it was GREAT to talk with so many RV builders, fliers, and those that would like to be. Seeing so many fantastically crafted airplanes was just as great - homebuilders really turn out some marvelous stuff! (Paul Dye on VAF)

Turks and Caicos by RV

On the groundDebra and Scott Mills have provided to Doug Reeves what must be the most comprehensive travelogue ever by RVers. The two were in a gaggle of RVs that made the trek in April. The pdf file is, understandably, huge and takes a bit to download. (VAF)

TIPS/Q&A

Spring Projects - Ground Power - Heater Insulation

To finish my interior lighting to the rear seats, I had to re-open the interior side panels, and to add a ground charging circuit to both the main and aux batteries, I had to open the flap tube areas, so I used this time to open up all of the cabin panels again since I had wanted to insulate my SCAT tubing for the heater feeds too. Now the SCAT tube shouldn't radiate heat until aft of the fuel valve area, which was just one of those things I intended to do to help ensure the fuel lines stayed cool. Spring projects. Lesson learned on wiring a GNS-430W

I'll throw out this tidbit so it can help someone else. When I wired up my avionics, I had one serial output from the GNS-430W go to my autopilot and a separate serial output go to the EFIS. I thought that would give me the most flexibility. Turns out both the EFIS and autopilot want the same "aviation" format. The 430W can only output a particular format on one serial output. I'll have to do a little re-wiring. (Dave Parsons on VAF) (More)

Making a deposit into my motivation account

Burke-Lakefront Airport in ClevelandBuilder's motivation comes in all forms. While we're pounding rivets and soldering wires, it's hard to keep from making mistakes, because our concentration often shifts from what we're doing, to what we're going to be doing someday. Flying. Flying to our dream locations. For some it's Catalina, or Bermuda. For others, it's Cleveland. Go figure. (More)

Autopilots the French way

What They're Building

Scott Binder, Touchet, WA, RV-9A

Removing Blue Plastic . Used my soldering iron and started removing the plastic where the pre-punched holes are.... It was fun!!! Very easy to do, and with medium heat on your iron, your merely "scoring" the plastic, and it is easily removed..... no scratches underneath!

Nose gear

Ideally we’d like to ream both the mount and gear leg at the same time. However we couldn’t guarantee the parts would stay lined up. So we reamed the engine mount first and then the gear leg. We set the NAS6605-28X bolt in the freezer while we went across the hangar row to chat with another buddy and fix a CHT probe on his gorgeous C-182. After that was done, I lubed up the bolt and proceed it to insert it from the bottom.

Cleve makes the big cut
Making the "big cut." "We put the frame in the canopy and clamped it as best we could and marked the inside of the canopy using the forward bow as a guide, leaving a clearance of 1/16" in front of the bow. We then turned the canopy over and pulled a piece of duck tape overlying the mark."
